about

Allegedly born somewhere in the Kentucky River basin, by the
time it arrived at a Welsh farmhouse in summer 2021 this tune had
undergone a substantial transformation. Although the name
suggests a religious connotation of some sort, there is apparently
none. Spurred on by the book The Many-Headed Hydra, we dived
into the archives to look into the history of the concept of glory.
The reading in the mid-section comes from an anonymous tract
published in the aftermath of the English Civil War, A Justification
of the Mad Crew, in support of a disparate group of dissidents who
would later come to be collectively known as ‘ranters’:
That this one God is served and gloriously worshipped in all,
both things and persons
Here glory lyeth
Peeping through the lattis, and looking behind the wall
It is the swearer, the poor ignorant drunkard and atheist,
the thief, the whoremonger
The beasts of the field, the fishes of the sea, the birds
Here glory lyeth
He beholds all things and persons with and in the same glory
He pulleth down the mighty from their throne
Here glory lyeth
Demonized as dangerously heretical by both sides in the Civil War
for their revolutionary religious and social libertinism, they sought
a new social order of equality and justice, and reputedly also
enjoyed a raucous party. We’re not religious, but we appreciate
their spirit.

lyrics

Take the time to face yourself and brace yourself,
for the inevitable melting down of self awareness,
swimming out, out in a sea of glory

about

The Wanton String Band London, UK

The Wanton String Band play shamelessly hedonistic folk dance psychedelia, ranging from face-melting renditions of Appalachian fiddle tunes to synth-infused trip-hop murder ballads. Their ecstatic, infectious take on traditional music has had audiences dancing on tables and hanging from rafters since its unlikely inception. ... more
